Ayurvedic Management of Dry skin

Dry skin or Xerosis is very common in cold regions. It is predominantly a Vata disorder which reduces the effect of Kapha (moisture) on the skin. Some of the common external causes are long hot water baths, cold and dry weather, harsh soaps, tight clothing, controlling natural urges, staying awake late in the nights, irregular food habits, eating spicy food and indulging in physical and mental exertion etc.  Internal causes mainly include deficiency of vitamins (A, E, B3 and B6), stress, less water intake etc. Dry skin manifests with itching and if ignored can sometimes lead to dermatitis swelling, infection and other serious skin disorders.  Ayurveda recognises dry skin as a symptom of impending diseases.
